Calm cruising, booming attractions, top-notch amenities and a world-class facility await at this season’s newest hot spot for cruisers: Navy Pier Marina.
Situated on historic Navy Pier along the gorgeous Chicago River, the highly anticipated, mostly transient marina boasts 19 finger piers with side-tie moorings for vessels up to 183 feet. The one-of-a-kind retro boater’s amenities building is constructed out of repurposed shipping containers and provides exclusive guest access to a lounge, washroom, laundry, ship store and more. Enjoy accommodations including pump-out, 24-hour security, a pet-relief area and concierge services.
Chicago native Randy Podolsky said he has been dreaming about the marina at Navy Pier since he got his first boat in 1983. The concept began in late 2015, and Podolsky’s vision to finally activate the marina’s north side into a transient destination appealing to unique visitors officially came to life in 2024.
“The uniqueness of Navy Pier on top of its location and incredible access is that a dozen boaters can get together and have a rendezvous in the same marina, on the same pier — and that’s exciting to boaters,” says Podolsky. “We stayed very true to the transient model, but to round out the marina we are also offering a limited occupancy to seasonal charters; it’s all hand-in-hand with bringing unique visitors to the pier.”
Navy Pier has everything from vibrant restaurants and retail to museums, attractions and entertainment within walking distance. Kick back and relax for a serene day on the lake or get adventurous and explore the bustling pier. From witnessing breathtaking views of the Chicago skyline atop the iconic Centennial Wheel to new attractions like Flyover, an exhilarating ride that transports you into an immersive experience, guests can enjoy endless activities at the Pier.
For lodging, several options are nearby, such as Sable Hotel, located just steps from the docks. Feast on cultural cuisine at restaurants along the pier, such as Chef Art Smith’s Reunion, classic deep-dish pizza from Giordano’s or fine dining at Lirica. Head to Offsore Rooftop adjacent to the Festival Hall to see the city like never before at the nation’s largest rooftop venue.
Must-see stops include the Chicago Children’s Museum and Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
Check out the city’s tour boats on the south side of Navy Pier offering everything from sightseeing and sunset cruises to private charters. Explore the city by bike with rentals at the pier or catch easy-access transportation on anything from the water taxi to the Metro train located just two miles away.
Podolsky says activating the pier on the marina’s north side will not only bring opportunities for visitors but will also benefit the community and provide jobs to locals.
“This will give us the opportunity to hire from the city and give the community a chance to be a part of all of it — to water, boating, business — the whole shot. That’s something we’re working on,” says Podolsky.
The marina is also working with local organizations and initiatives such as Friends of The Chicago Lighthouse, a project to restore and preserve the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse for future tours and generations. Plan your trip around fireworks celebrations, cultural festivals and seasonal events such as the new Chicago International Boat Show at Navy Pier Marina premiering this summer.
